We mention some of the properties of this sequence and describe a Voronovskaja type asymptotic formula. Besides, we find the error estimates of this approximation in terms of the modulus of continuity. lastly, we introduce a numerical example and compare the results obtained

    Using the Delphi Technique to Search for Empirical Measures of Local Planning Agency Power

    This paper shows how the Delphi technique was used to conceptualize and operationalize local planning agency power. In the first of two Delphi studies, twelve scholars suggested four dimensions of agency power: legal authority, degree of control, relative autonomy, and capacity. In the second Delphi study, sixteen professional planners operationalized power dimensions proposed by the first Delphi study. The dimensions were operationalized in the context of Florida’s planning system. The proposed measures were tested empirically by reviewing Florida statutes, surveying municipal planning agencies, and conducting statistical analysis. This research presents important lessons learned for researchers interested in Delphi studies and proposes valid empirical measures of local planning agency power

    Induced polarization and electronic properties of carbon doped boron-nitride nanoribbons

    The electronic properties of boron-nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) doped with a line of carbon atoms are investigated by using density functional calculations. Three different configurations are possible: the carbon atoms may replace a line of boron or nitrogen atoms or a line of alternating B and N atoms which results in very different electronic properties. We found that: i) the NCB arrangement is strongly polarized with a large dipole moment having an unexpected direction, ii) the BCB and NCN arrangement are non-polar with zero dipole moment, iii) the doping by a carbon line reduces the band gap independent of the local arrangement of boron and nitrogen around the carbon line, iv) an electric field parallel to the carbon line polarizes the BN sheet and is found to be sensitive to the presence of carbon dopants, and v) the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital decreases linearly with increasing applied electric field directed parallel to the carbon line. We show that the polarization and energy gap of carbon doped BNNRs can be tuned by an electric field applied parallel along the carbon line.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Sensory organ like response determines the magnetism of zigzag-edged honeycomb nanoribbons

    We present an analytical theory for the magnetic phase diagram for zigzag edge terminated honeycomb nanoribbons described by a Hubbard model with an interaction parameter U . We show that the edge magnetic moment varies as ln U and uncover its dependence on the width W of the ribbon. The physics of this owes its origin to the sensory organ like response of the nanoribbons, demonstrating that considerations beyond the usual Stoner-Landau theory are necessary to understand the magnetism of these systems. A first order magnetic transition from an anti-parallel orientation of the moments on opposite edges to a parallel orientation occurs upon doping with holes or electrons. The critical doping for this transition is shown to depend inversely on the width of the ribbon. Using variational Monte-Carlo calculations, we show that magnetism is robust to fluctuations. Additionally, we show that the magnetic phase diagram is generic to zigzag edge terminated nanostructures such as nanodots. Furthermore, we perform first principles modeling to show how such magnetic transitions can be realized in substituted graphene nanoribbons.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Child Mortality Inequalities and Linkage with Sanitation Facilities in Bangladesh

    Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to assets and other household data, collected as part of the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) in 2004, to rank individuals according to a household socioeconomic index and to investigate whether this predicts access to the sanitation system or outcomes. PCA was used for determining wealth indices for 11,440 women in 10,500 households in Bangladesh. The index was based on the presence or absence of items from a list of 13 specific household assets and three housing characteristics. PCA revealed 35 components, of which the first component accounted for 18% of the total variance. Ownership of assets and housing features contributed almost equally to the variance in the first component. In this study, ownership of latrines was examined as an example of sanitation-intervention access, and rates of mortality of neonates, infant, and children aged less than five years (under-five mortality) as examples of health outcomes. The analysis demonstrated significant gradients in both access and outcome measures across the wealth quintiles. The findings call for more attention to approaches for reducing health inequalities. These could include reforms in the health sector to provide more equitable allocation of resources, improvement in the quality of health services offered to the poor, and redesigning interventions and their delivery to ensure that they are more pro-poor

    The aeolian sedimentation record of the Thar desert

    A review of the aeolian sedimentary record of the Thar desert is presented. This includes a regional survey of the major dune forms, their genesis and their relationship to climate and other regional landforms. A key aspect of this work is the chronometry of the dunes using luminescence methods. Luminescence dating of sand has enabled quantification of the duration of the phases of sand aggradation and quiescence, time scales of dune migration and the dating of pedogenic carbonates. We demonstrate that the conventional wisdom of synchronicity of dune aggradation with glacial epoch is not true in the context of Thar sands and here only a short durationwindow of opportunity existed for dune aggradation. Luminescence ages further suggest that this window occurred during a transitional climatic regime from glacial to interglacial about 4-10 ka after the glacial epoch. Other inferences included are that: • the aeolian activity in the Thar began over > 150 ka, resolving that Thar is not of anthropogenic origin as suggested previously; • the present spatial extent of the aeolian activity in the Thar is in a contracted stage compared to that in the geological past, which refutes the arguments on its rapid north-eastward expansion; • the current dune migration rates in areas of significant human-induced disturbances are much higher than during the geological past; • the monsoon activity in the Thar varied significantly, from being minimal during the isotopic marine stages 4 and 2 to being close to the present during stage 3; • on shorter time scales the dune activities correlated with the lacustrine records of the region with a phase difference of a few centuries and a periodicity of ~1500 years; • the sand aggradation climate in the southern margin in Gujarat gradually shrank northwards such that in general dunes older than 10 ka are seen in the extreme southern margin and dunes younger than 2ka ages occur mostly in the western part of Rajasthan

    On some generalized stopping power sum rules

    The Lindhard-Winther (LW) equipartition sum rule shows that within the linear response theory, the stopping power of an energetic point-charge projectile in a degenerate electron gas medium, receives equal contributions from single-particle and collective excitations in the medium. In this paper we show that the LW sum rule does not necessarily hold for an extended projectile ion and for ion-clusters moving in a fully degenerate electron gas. We have derived a generalized equipartition sum rule and some related sum rules for this type of projectiles. We also present numerical plots for He+^{+} ion and He+^{+} ion-clusters.Comment: 2 figures, LaTe
